The Mariri Wildlife Sanctuary has already taken a major step towards protecting local wildlife by acquiring a piece of land that is essential for the preservation of several species that inhabit the region, such as wild cats, groups of monkeys, tapirs and many others. But to ensure that this conservation mission continues to thrive, we need crucial support: expanding the protected area by acquiring land adjacent to the sanctuary.
The Importance of Enlargement
The area that Mariri already protects is vital to the survival of wildlife, but it is constantly being threatened by destructive human activities. Soy monocultures, cattle ranching and the expansion of cities are rapidly encroaching on natural ecosystems, forcing animals to lose their habitat and fight for their survival. In this scenario, every piece of preserved land becomes even more precious.
Now, a unique opportunity has arisen: there is a plot of land available next to the Sanctuary, and if we can acquire it, we could significantly increase the protected area. This adjacent land is essential to ensuring the continuation of a safe space for the animals, serving as a natural buffer zone for the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park . Without this expansion, the forest is at risk of being lost to grazing and other destructive activities.
The Urgent Challenge: Immediate protection
If this land falls into the wrong hands, which is very likely without our support, the area could be turned into pasture and the forest burned and completely destroyed. The loss of this strip of land would be a devastating blow to the Sanctuary and its resident animals, who depend on this flora for shelter and food, and also to the biodiversity of the region. We need to act now, before it is too late.
Every year, Mariri faces a daily battle against forest fires, many of which are caused by neighboring cattle ranchers. We literally risk our lives to put out these fires and save the forest. We have been facing this challenge for 12 years, and if it weren’t for our constant intervention, much of the forest would have already been lost. Therefore, acquiring this new land is essential to continue this preservation work and to expand the area we protect.
